Dutch Official stamps are postage stamps used exclusively for correspondence of government authorities or public institutions. They differ from regular definitive stamps through their specific administrative function and reflect separate tariff and accounting systems operating within official state communication.

Official stamps were introduced to clearly identify and account for mail sent by public authorities. Technically, they often resemble regular postage stamps but are distinguished by overprints, specific colours or dedicated denominations indicating official use. Their issue and application were strictly regulated and limited to authorised institutions. As a result, official stamps served not only as franking devices but also as administrative tools that supported accountability and internal control within government communication systems.

In everyday postal operations, official stamps were used for correspondence sent by ministries, departments and other public services. Their presence on mail items made it immediately clear that the contents were official in nature and subject to special accounting arrangements. Official stamps therefore reflect the expansion of government administration and the increasing need to monitor postal expenditure. They illustrate how postal services adapted their procedures to meet institutional and bureaucratic requirements.

For collectors, official stamps represent a distinct collecting area closely linked to administrative history. Interest focuses on different issues, overprint types, periods of use and postal applications. Covers and documents bearing genuine official usage are particularly valued. Official stamps provide insight into the interaction between postal services and government administration and document formal communication within the public sector.
