Dutch Line-perforated coil stamps originate from sheet stamps and therefore do not feature continuous perforation, but show alternating perforation patterns along the sides. After production, they were cut into strips and rewound into rolls for use in dispensers or franking equipment within regular postal operations.

Roulette-perforated stamps were produced by guiding a rotating perforation wheel along printed stamp sheets. Unlike comb perforation, where multiple sides are perforated simultaneously, this process applies perforation sequentially. Because the stamps originate from sheets rather than continuous rolls, the perforation may differ from side to side depending on the direction of the wheel and the position on the sheet. These technical conditions result in measurable variations in perforation alignment and spacing, forming the defining characteristics of roulette-perforated issues.

In postal use, roulette-perforated stamps were issued during periods when postal administrations sought more efficient perforation methods without converting to full roll production. They were typically used for regular sheet issues intended for everyday correspondence. The rotating wheel allowed continuous processing of sheets, but also introduced subtle irregularities at the stamp edges. These features reflect a transitional phase in stamp production, illustrating experimentation with machinery aimed at improving speed and throughput.

For collectors, roulette-perforated stamps represent a technically specialised field. Interest focuses on identifying side-to-side differences, perforation irregularities and comparisons with comb- and line-perforated counterparts. Study of these stamps highlights how production techniques influence appearance and collectability. Roulette-perforated stamps therefore document an important stage in the evolution of perforation technology within sheet stamp manufacturing.
