Dutch Line-perforated coil stamps originate from sheet stamps and therefore do not feature continuous perforation, but show alternating perforation patterns along the sides. After production, they were cut into strips and rewound into rolls for use in dispensers or franking equipment within regular postal operations.

Roulette-perforated stamps were produced by guiding a rotating perforation wheel along printed stamp sheets. Unlike comb perforation, where multiple sides are perforated simultaneously, this process applies perforation sequentially. Because the stamps originate from sheets rather than continuous rolls, the perforation may differ from side to side depending on the direction of the wheel and the position on the sheet. These technical conditions result in measurable variations in perforation alignment and spacing, forming the defining characteristics of roulette-perforated issues.
