Since 1999, the Dutch postal service has issued large-format stamp packages in the form of a sticker sheet, typically consisting of 50 self-adhesive stamps, and in some cases even 100. This sticker sheet is integrated into a sturdy paper cover, fitted with a hanging eyelet or hanger-type attachment, making the packaging suitable for display on retail shelves. The cover is folded one or more times and is usually sealed with one or two glue dots.
These packages are referred to by the postal service itself as mailers and are also known in philately as integrated hanging booklets (iHB). Since their introduction, many dozens of different mailers have been issued, featuring a wide variety of designs, themes and postage denominations.
The collecting field is followed by a dedicated group of philatelists, while for many stamp collectors a single loose stamp from a mailer is usually sufficient. Building a complete mailer collection, however, is a labour-intensive and highly specialised pursuit. For many issues, multiple variants are known, including differences in colour, gloss or paper type (glossy or matte), as well as plate flaws, colour shifts and text variations, for example in website references or other printed details.
It is precisely these variants that make Dutch mailers especially appealing to specialised collectors and that form a fascinating and challenging field within modern philately.
